WE are approaching the 275th anniversary of the Battle of Fontenoy, which will be the sixth battle in my refight of the main central European theatre in the War of the Austrian Succession.
This battle strikes a particular chord with many wargamers because it was the subject of a complete book in 1975 by Charles Grant.
His son, Charles Stewart Grant, also covered the battle in his 2010 book Wargaming In History: Volume 2.

I this week re-read the relevant sections of both books for the umpteenth time as part of my preparations for the refight, which I know my regular wargames opponent will particularly enjoy as the French were commanded by his hero Maurice de Saxe.
